The owner, a travel writer, literally wrote the book about Palm Springs, and this is where he chose for his Palm Springs getaway. A big reason for that is the building, Ocotillo Lodge, a Mid-Century Modern landmark built in 1957. This amazing complex has quite a pedigree: designed by Modernist architect William Krisel, built by the Alexanders, later owned by Gene Autry, and the Palm Springs getaway of celebrities from Marilyn Monroe and Lucille Ball to Clark Gable (he stayed right next door to the Mid-Century Pad!).

Take a leisurely stroll around the property. The magnificently crafted, recently renovated resort-style pool is one of the largest in Palm Springs and the centerpiece of mesmerizing mountain views. There are two spa pools and plenty of common spaces to get to know your neighbors, including at the groovy Sunshine Bar (unmanned).

Ocotillo Lodge is conveniently located on East Palm Canyon Drive, steps from the ever-popular Koffi coffee shop and the hotspot Ace Hotel, and across the street from Elmer's, a local favorite restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Walk to shopping, dining and the all-important supermarket at Smoketree Shopping Center, about six minutes away on foot; it's just a few steps further to the swinging Saguaro Hotel.
